Gawwsh, I love this piece! My son was playing with a group of boys at Thompson's Beach (Cobram, Vic) during the annual Easter duck race. It was 35 degrees and oddly warm, so hundreds of kids were stripping off their clothes to cool down in the Murray river. Every time a speed boat went past, the kids would run into the water and wait for the "waves". Sticks and empty bottles were the best available props in the boys' game and when that got old, they would sprint down from the top of the sand and long-jump into the river together. The simplest fun, for literally hours! He slept well that night.
As a Mum of young kids, navigating a world where technology is constantly stealing our attention, this was a reminder that good company and an imagination still beats staring at a screen for hours.
